"What's the Big Deal About Synthetics?"
Many different kinds of base stocks may be used to create synthetic lubricants, allowing a synthetic to be designed for virtually any application.
Rather than being "good enough" for a certain application, they're designed to give you peak power, performance and fuel economy.
Synthetic lubricants are chemically engineered from pure chemicals rather than refined from crude oil. Synthetics are built from base stocks that contain no sulfur, nitrogen or other elements that invite the formation of sludge.
Synthetic lubricants can be used in higher temperatures than refined lubricants without breaking down. Because they resist breakdown, they can be used longer than refined lubricants.
The base stocks from which synthetic lubricants are made feature uniform and smooth molecular structures, which ensures low friction as lubricant layers slide across one another. Reduced friction increases energy through-put for greater fuel efficiency and power...and reduces heat and wear for longer equipment life.
Molecular uniformity also helps synthetics resist thinning in heat and thickening in cold. This helps them protect your engine better than refined oils over a system’s operating temperature range and helps ensure secure sealing.

The horsepower is 510 with a C18 engine, and with the power box on low it's around 570. One tractor I own is about 9100 hours on tach, and first time on tune up. Oils Are Not The Same!
People washed their laundry with sticks and rocks for a long time, too, and that worked pretty good....

Conventional Oils Work Okay, But Here's What Goes Wrong.....
Conventional oils (like most people are familiar with) are refined from crude oil. Refining is the process of separating light oil components from heavy
ones.
Crude oil contains a full range of different kinds of molecules. Many are similar in weight but not structure. The refining process can't distinguish such molecules, so conventional oil contains a wide assortment of molecules.
Many of these crude oil molecules are not beneficial to the lubrication process.
For example:
--Paraffin causes refined lubricants to thicken and flow poorly in cold temperatures.
--Molecules containing sulfur, nitrogen and other elements invite the formation of sludge and other byproducts of lubricant breakdown, especially in high temperatures.
Sludge and Breakdown By-Products Significantly Increase Wear.
The different shapes of the assorted molecules of refined lubricants means lubricant surfaces are irregular at the molecular level.
As lubricant layers flow across one another, these irregularities create friction...which consumes power, reduces fuel efficiency and increases heat and wear.
If you're going for "good enough", there's lots of oils that can do the job.
Conventional oils have served us well for generations. Oil guys got rich and built libraries. We honor you, standard oil! But times have changed. We can do a little better now.
In fact, we can do a lot better! We don't need to wash our laundry with sticks anymore!
Conventional oils did their job. It's just that synthetics are designed specifically to function BETTER.
They hold up better in extreme heat, function better in extreme cold...and that means longer engine life.

"Because a synthetic oil is chemically produced, there are no contaminants in the oil. By contrast, conventional oils contain small amounts of sulfur, wax, and asphaltic material that can promote detonation as well as varnish and sludge buildup. With no wax, synthetics will flow at much lower temperatures than conventional oils.
In fact, synthetic oils are now available with viscosity ratings as low as 0W-30...These oils flow more than seven times faster than a conventional 5W-30 motor oil during initial start-up, yet at normal operating temperatures act like a regular Grade 30 oil.
An 0W-30 synthetic oil is capable of pumping easily at -62 degrees F and flowing at even lower temperatures. Conventional oils are essentially frozen solid at that temperature, so there's simply no conventional equivalent to this new grade. There are 5W-30 conventional and synthetic oils, but even here, the synthetic has a real-world advantage....

Many different kinds of base stocks may be used to create synthetic lubricants, allowing a synthetic to be designed for virtually any application.
Some base stocks are ideal for use in extremely cold environments, others are perfect for use in extreme heat. Some are extremely safe in applications in which refined lubricants pose a fire or explosion hazard. Refined oils simply do not offer the design flexibility synthetics offer.

"Synthetic lubricants are made through chemical reactions. These new oils aren't synthetic or artificial in the sense that they're manufactured out of whole cloth--they still have the same natural ingredients found in "real" oil.
But in a synthetic lubricant, these ingredients are recombined like a Lego set to yield synthesized-hydrocarbon molecular chains with desirable characteristics and uniformity not found in even the highest-quality traditional motor oils. Typically, the best synthetic oils use a combination of up to three different synthetic base fluids--polyalphaolefin (PAO), synthetic esters, and alkylated aromatics.
